Why I Started Making Candles During a Pandemic

Amethyst Jones, Founder of I Love You Candles

Nobody starts a business during a pandemic on purpose. I started mine because I had no other choice. Not financially. Emotionally.

Everything Stopped

It was 2021. The pandemic had turned everything upside down and I was feeling every bit of it. I was working from home for the first time while trying to help my two kids with school from our kitchen table. The gyms were closed. The nail salons were closed. The hair salons were closed. Everything I used to do just for me was suddenly gone.

And without those things I stopped feeling like myself.

The anxiety set in. I was overwhelmed every single day. Eating too much. Drinking too much. Running on empty and giving everything I had to everyone around me while quietly falling apart on the inside.

I needed something to do that would calm me down. Something slow. Something intentional. Something that was just mine.

A Tuesday Afternoon That Changed Everything

I found candle making.

I ordered a basic starter kit, cleared a corner of my kitchen and poured my first candle on a Tuesday afternoon while my kids were doing homework. And something happened that I was not expecting at all.

I felt calm.

"For the first time in months I was not thinking about the news, the kids, the work or the worry. I was just there. Present. And it felt like exhaling for the first time in a year."

Making candles requires you to slow down. You cannot rush the process. You have to watch the temperature, time the pour and choose your fragrance with care. There is no room for anxious thoughts when your hands are busy creating something beautiful.

Week after week I kept pouring. I started experimenting with scent combinations. I started gifting them to friends and family. And every single person who received one said the same thing. This made me feel something.

From Hobby to Purpose

I kept making candles because I needed them. But I kept making more because I realized something important.

I was not alone.

Millions of people went through exactly what I went through during the pandemic. Overwhelmed, disconnected, invisible to themselves. People who lost their routines, their rituals and their sense of self. People who were carrying everything for everyone except themselves.

And I thought — what if a candle could be more than just a candle? What if it could be a message? A feeling? A quiet reminder that you are worth slowing down for?

That is how I Love You Candles was born.

Not from a business plan. Not from a market analysis. From a Tuesday afternoon in my kitchen, a little wax and the desperate need to feel like myself again.

What I Want You to Know

Every candle I pour is made with that person in mind. The one holding everything together. The one who forgot to take care of themselves. The one who just needs five quiet minutes and something warm to remind them they are still here and they still matter.

Whether you are buying one for yourself or gifting it to someone you love, I want you to feel seen. I want the moment you light that candle to feel like permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to breathe. Permission to take up space in your own life.

That is the whole point. That has always been the whole point.

Thank you for being here and for supporting this small business and the big dream behind it. Every single order means more than you know.

With so much love,
Amethyst
